Is Worrying a Sin?

Updated: Feb 11, 2020

For many of us, worry fits like a glove. Some of us worry about what to worry about next. How much time do we have to spend with thoughts churning in our minds, seeking resolutions and making matters worse.

Worry is a sin but here is some help. All of us fight to eliminate worry from our lives. In scripture, Jesus spent so much time comforting people. Think on these powerful scriptures:

" Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." (John 14.27)

" But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows." (Luke 12:7)

Jesus said:

“Has anyone by fussing before the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? If fussing can’t even do that, why fuss at all? Walk into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They don’t fuss with their appearance—but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them. If God gives such attention to the wildflowers, most of them never even seen, don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you?"

Jesus continues from The Message translation of scripture:

"What I’m trying to do here is get you to relax, not be so preoccupied with getting so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep yourself in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Don’t be afraid of missing out. You’re my dearest friends! The Father wants to give you the very kingdom itself. " (Luke 12:25-32) msg

Our Lord Jesus understands our frailties and our vulnerability to Satan's presenting issues in a manner that makes us worry. Satan appeals to our imagination, which is a gift from God, but when contaminated by the culture, we can take worrying to another level. If we are not careful we can play it out in our minds "what could" or "what if", all the way to a sorrowful ending. We could start moving in that direction as if these thoughts are reality, doing things and treating people based on what we imagined they did or said.

The word of God says: "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;" (II Cor 10:5).

And when we obsess over getting things, scripture admonishes us:

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matt 6:33)

Prayer Life

Our prayer life and belief in God's word removes worry. We can use the peace and promises of God as we move along. We can turn every worry into a prayer. We petition the Father for help. He wants to help. In prayer we can " Cast all our care upon him; for he careth for you". (I Peter 5:7)

I And in the Old Testament, God did alot of comforting. There was Joshua who when Moses died was left to lead millions of God’s people to the promised land. Then there was Nehemiah when he encountered so much opposition against rebuilding the wall, how about King David when he was up against so many battles and family issues. These folk remembered their God. The Lord helped and comforted them.

" If you are going to pray, Don't worry. If you are going to worry, Don't pray" -- Y. Barr

When we think about our committed relationship to God our Father, the mindfulness, and staying in the moment with Him, we pray, we praise with songs, and we are thankful. There is no place for worry. Worry is not a part of the DNA of a Believer. God's word and His promises, keep worry in check.

" Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us". (Ephesians 3:20)
